Lower Salt River The Lower Salt River seen here on a calm January morning is easily accessible below Stewart Mountain Dam and provides ample recreational opportunities throughout the year. Fishermen try their luck on a variety of game fish — native and non-native — on the tailwaters of Stewart Mountain Dam. Wild horses occupy the Lower Salt River and its adjacent lands. The horses are a major attraction for the area, albeit a controversial one. A variety of geometric and representational petroglyphs are etched into the rocks at a spring on the Hieroglyphic Trail in the Superstition Mountains. Releasing the “Bronze Ghost,” a Sonora sucker caught on the fly. It took four trips to finally catch and land one.
